Create Your Own Holistic Medicine Cabinet

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

Creating your own Natural Medicine Cabinet sounds daunting, but it is rather simple!

Growing up, I was certain that all the answers for disease rested in the hands of my holistic paediatric doctor and my Mom.

It has always been a passion of my Mom's to let the earth provide the medicine that our bodies need to support health. This passion then became my own as I took the responsibility of my health into my own hands led by her example.

I’m not against modern medicine by any means, in fact, I wouldn’t be here writing this post without the skilled hands of surgeons and clean operating rooms.

I am grateful I live near Harvard trained doctors and can turn to them when I need them!

When it comes to my daily needs and being proactive, it just feels right to try more natural approaches to health before running to get a prescription. I don’t want to cover up symptoms, I want to get to the root of why I have the symptoms, to begin with.

Having a collection of great supplements, essential oils, and herbs on hand when you need them is a smart idea. You will find up to 80% of your daily needs can be met with natural products and solutions!

Let's dive in!

How to Create a Natural Medicine Cabinet

Here are some of the things you can keep handy in your holistic medicine chest. This list is not exhaustive, but a great start as you find what remedies work best for you and your family.

Skin Issues:

Oregano Oil is a great antibiotic for skin boils and acne but it needs to be diluted before it is applied. You can successfully removed warts and moles with oregano oil.

Baking soda or Bentonite Clay are good choices for splinters or to dry out poison ivy.

Colloidal Silver is a great first pick for a burn or to disinfect a cut. It’s also good for a sore throat.

Lavender essential oil is a natural antihistamine that soothes sunburns, heat related burns, and is soothing on rashes and hives when diluted and applied topically.

Frankincense and Helichrysum will do wonders for your skin. Renewing and regenerating skin cells while improving the skins appearance and reducing fine lines. Helichrysum is a natural wound healer and coagulant that stops bleeding when applied.

Aloe Vera is very soothing to sunburns and cuts.

Respiratory Problems:

A great choice for respiratory problems ranging from the flu to asthma is Elderberry Syrup.

We have used a diffuser to combat bronchitis and chest colds, adding Eucalyptus, OnGuard, and Tea Tree oil and leaning right over the diffuser, breathing in the oils. These oils can also be applied diluted on your the chest.

When my lungs feels heavy and like a cough or chest infection is starting, I use an essential oil roller of Onguard, Oregano, and Melissa oil rolled over my chest and neck to stop the illness before it starts.

Quercitin is a great anti-histamine that prevents the mast cells from overproducing histamine in the body. This helps with asthma, seasonal allergies, and sinus infections.

Vitamin C and Vitamin D3 are important for boosting the immune system and helping your body fight whatever virus you may have. Vit C is also excellent for helping calm down mast cell activation syndrome symptoms.

Stomach Problems:

Apple Cider Vinegar is my first choice for heartburn unless you have Histamine Intolerance then I would choose Baking soda.

Peppermint oil has very calming effects on the stomach and greatly reduces nausea. DigestZen (ZenGest EU) is a powerful blend of digestion soothing oils that calm the storm gluten and dairy can cause and promote healthy bowel movements.

Activated Charcoal and Oregano oil is what we use as to help sort out a stomach bug. It has crazy absorption power and helps to trap bacteria and viruses in the stomach and gut.

PB Assist is the probiotic we use as a way to support our digestive system. This is not a treatment for an acute problem but will help long term to support your system.

TerraZyme Digestive Enzyme is a personal life saver when my gut is feeling off. I take it before eating to support digesting my meals, but I also take it after if I found a food or drink upset my stomach. It is my number one go-to to quiet that gluten and dairy storm!

Urinary/Bladder Infections:

Many have fabulous results with D-Mannose for bladder infections. The D-Mannose is a simple sugar that the bacteria love and they will leave your bladder wall to attach to the sugar, then you just flush them right out.

Cranberry juice is always helpful as it attacks the bacteria and also stimulates urination.

Our Natural Medicine Cabinet

I keep our herbal medicine collection in the kitchen where we spend most of our time as a family.

Having these items on hand is a great start to building your own medicine cabinet.

I'd love to know if they work for you!

There are times when you have an emergency situation so please treat an emergency as such and seek medical treatment.

I would never tell a mother of a very sick child to try an essential oil before going to the ER.

But with that said, we have used essential oils on the way to the doctor, en route to the Emergency Room, and in hospital beds when staying overnight.

These remedies I shared are things we go to before a situation becomes an emergency.

They are also what we use to calm our nervous system during an emergency.

Because a calm nervous system and heart is very beneficial to our health!

"A calm heart gives life to the body."- Proverbs 14:30

Use common sense. Have fun with your holistic medicine cabinet!
